Inorganic Esters
Inorganic Esters
Sulfates
We have seen previously that sulfate esters, like tosylate or mesylate, are very good leaving groups. These sulfate esters can be synthesized from alcohols.
Nitrates
Nitrates can also be synthesized from alcohols using nitric acid.
One famous example of this is the nitration of glycerine to make nitroglycerine. In 1866, Alfred Nobel discovered that nitroglycerine can be mixed into diatomaceous earth to make dynamite.

Phosphates
Phosphates are not as common in organic chemistry, but they play a big role in biochemistry. Phosphates are a part of the nucleic acids found in RNA and DNA. They also play a major role in ATP and ADP.
